Water Power Plant Rakowiec

On the Nogat river, in the town of Malbork-Rakowiec, a water power plant was constructed within the years 1934-35. The permission to use it was given in 1938 by the Staroste of Nowy Dwór Poviat for the City of Gdańsk, and in was supposed to work as a city power plant.

Electric energy generation in this flow power plant depends on the amount of water which flows from Vistula into the Nogat river. Maximum water flow is 25 m3/s and is regulated on the weir in Biała Góra. At low amount of water in Vistula river, the flow of water into the Nogat river stops, and the power plant cannot operate then.

The power plant is equipped with a turbine set consisting of a vertical Kaplan turbine with siphon turbine chamber and synchronic generator coupled with gear and turbine. Nominal turbine discharge of water is 30 m3/s, and attainable power amounts to 0.560 MW at the head of 2.45 m.

Electric energy of operating generator with the voltage of 3 kV is led out by means of a transformer 3/15 kV situated on the area of power station 110/15 kV in Main Power Supply Station Rakowiec, in which other electrical and distribution devices of the power plant are also situated.

The power plant is located in the Nogat river bed and is a part of the water step, the owner of which is the Regional Water System Management in Gdańsk. It is situated between the water steps in Szonowo (14 km above the power plant) and Michałowo (10 km below the power plant), where it is planned to create additional water power plants. Their investor will be the Regional Water System Management in Gdańsk.

In 1945, when the German army retreated from Malbork, the turbine shaft was intentionally destroyed in its mechanical part.

After the United Masuria Power Plants District took over the property and commissioned the repair of the damaged parts, the power plant started operating on 22
nd July 1947.

In 1956 it was taken over by the Water Power Plants Group of Northern District in Prędzieszyn, and then by the Power Station in Gdańsk – Region of Water Power Plants in Straszyn, from which it was taken over by Power Plant in Elbląg. Currently, the owner of Water Power Plant in Rakowiec is the Heat and Power Plant Elbląg.
